Back to school Beauty: San Juan edition

by : Katrina

Hello everyone! As I said on Manicure Monday I recently relocated to San Juan, Puerto Rico. I’m a Virgo- I just can’t keep still. I got tired of work, work, oh and more work (& New Jersey) so I decided to just get up, leave, and go back to school. Why Puerto Rico? Why not? 😉 Coming from the hot NYC summer I figured the transition to the humid, rainy 90 degree weather everyday of PR would be a piece of cake but I was completely wrong.

1. my face freaked out – I have normal skin and never had problems with breakouts until I got here! It’s probably because of all the sweating. i know, gross.

2. Is there such thing as hair sun burn? because I definitely acquired that here.

3. I feel like I’m getting darker and darker by the second. Sun block has become part of my daily regimen for my entire body! (I don’t want to come back looking like a leather bag) same goes for OFF bug spray 😦

4. Last but definitely not least: Make-up. I’m limited to cool lipstick, mascara, little blush, and eyeliner if I’m lucky. Foundation or anything else? It’s just too hot for all that!

With the help of:

Cetaphil Dermacontrol Mosturizer SPF 30– Aveeno Daily moisturizer was too heavy and thick for me in this heat. This moisturizer is for acne prone skin, absorbs quickly to restore your skin’s natural balance, and provide a non-greasy, matte finish.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-touch Sunscreen – SPF 70- the sun is real out here! This is my favorite sunblock so far. It’s super light weight and smells like baby lotion.

Aveeno Calming Body Wash– showering 3x/day, sunblock, and bug spray can definitely dry out your skin so bars of soap are out of the question for me. This creamy lather moisturizes my skin and is enriched with natural ingredients known for their calming benefits.

Shea Moisture Deep Masque -weekly for my sun burnt hair (product review in previous post :P)

I think I’m back to school ready!

Here is a slide show of some of my daily looks! enjoy 🙂

Anyone have suggestions on lightweight foundations with SPF? something that can withstand this heat!

Shea Moisture- My Curl Thirst Quencher

by Katrina

On the hunt for the right curl cream? Sam introduced me to Shea Moisture products, which was also suggested by Refinery 29. Before, I used Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curl cream and it just stopped working like everything else. My hair was also damaged from years of flat ironing at least 3x per week so I needed something to bring my hair back to life. I cut off what was left of my damaging ombre and started using the Deep Treatment Masque (available at Walgreens $8.99) once a week. I would leave it in over night and wash my hair in the morning.

What this product does: This all-natural intensive treatment masque deeply moisturizes and repairs dry, damaged, or brittle hair. (perfect for transitioning chemically treated hair to natural)
Pros: Affordable for those on a budget, smells good, contains sea kelp to seal and smooth hair cuticles, and argan oil to promote hair elasticity.
Cons: None (So Far)

While my hair is still wet, I apply the Curl Enhancing Smoothie(available at Walgreens $7.99).

What this product does: The nutrient rich vegetable butters condition hair, and restore moisture and shine. It enhances curls, minimizes frizz, and provides curl control.
Pros: A natural product. Contains coconut oil, silk protein , and neem oil which are all beneficial for curly hair! Smells amazing.
Cons: none!

Since I started using my hair feels very soft and my curls are more defined. Also, its lasts! no need to re-apply the curl enhancer the following morning. So far these products are the best products I’ve found for my hair. Get to Walgreens ASAP while they’re still on sale! I’ve been using these heaven sent products for 6 weeks now. Check out the slideshow for before and after pictures!

Has anyone else tried any of the Shea Moisture products? Please share your curly hair secrets with us!

Total Hair Envy- Vanessa

20130319-104137.jpg

It’s our first Scavenger Hunt post!

On St. Patrick’s day, my friend Derrick invited me over for a potluck. During the potluck, I met his girlfriend, Vanessa who had the most amazing and healthy looking hair I have seen in real life. I had to ask her a few questions! Vanessa said that wintry weather makes her hair extremely dry which leads it to become easily tangled. So her precautions are as followed…

Name: Vanessa
Age: 21
Location: Brooklyn, NY (originally from San Francisco, CA)

Hair Care Regiment:

• Shampoos and conditions hair once or twice a week with Joico k-pak Reconstruct Shampoo and Conditoner for Dry or Damaged Hair (Shampoo: $15.80, amazon.com; Conditioner: $12.99 at Walgreens)

• Deep conditions with Paul Mitchell’s Keratin Cream Rinse once a week for 15 minutes. ($19.59, available on amazon.com)

•Styled with Schwarzkpof OSiS Buff Styling Cream ($14.99, amazon.com), finger curled her hair and air dried.

What’s your Beauty Secret? Her boyfriend’s Mom (Diane Oertwig, San Francisco based) is her hairdresser and beauty consultant.

Sam’s Got a Brand New Do

I survived the ombré epidemic.

20130316-163457.jpg

Don’t get me wrong, it was my initial idea to dip dye my hair. However, in the end (months later), the damage was not worth the experimenting.

Also my trusty hairdresser, Gladys clued me in on something I didn’t know before: “If you don’t cut your split ends, they’ll rise and cut themselves”. – Take note, ladies!

I was a little shell shocked at first but…it’s “growing” on me.

Salon: Jeunesse Coiffure, 891 Ninth Avenue, New York, NY 10019. (Between 57th & 58th St)

Hairdresser: Gladys!
